174/P Echeclus in outburst - 2017/12/10

On December 08, 2017 B. Skiff reported on mpml mailing list, that the centaur 174P/Echeclus  (also known as 60558 Echeclus) "seems to be at least 4 mag brighter than expected, and indeed as it appeared at the start of last night's images.  The Dec 7 series shows the outburst in progress on images taken near 2:00 and 2:48 UT; it is much brighter now (Dec 8 about 3:30 UT)". Last observations before this outburst had this object at around magnitude 18.

New comet C/2017 S3 PanSTARRS

New comet C/2017 S3 (PANSTARRS) was discovered 2017-Aug-17 at magnitude 21.8 by the Pan-STARRS survey.


The object's retrograde orbit is inclined 99 degrees from the ecliptic with the object currently at 4.9 AU from the sun.

The new comet is expected to pass perihelion in mid-August 2018 at only 0.2 AU from the sun. The ephemeris by the Minor Planet Center predicts a magnitude of 4.1 at perihelion but at very low solar elongation.

Asteroid 3122 Florence - 2017/09/03

Nota storica: 3122 Florence è stato scoperto il 2 marzo 1981 da Schelte John Bus, dall'osservatorio di Siding Spring, sito vicino Coonabarabran, nel Nuovo Galles del Sud, in Australia, come un oggetto di magnitudine 17,5.[5] Furono in seguito trovate immagini di prescoperta acquisite il 9 marzo del 1979.

L'asteroide fu così nominato in onore di Florence Nightingale, un'infermiera britannica considerata la fondatrice dell'assistenza infermieristica moderna.
